Formerly Concord Junction, this former industrial and commercial area now boasts a surprising collection of good places to eat.

West Concord, 2.7 miles (4.35 km) west of Concord center along Main Street (MA Route 62; map), has no outstanding natural or historic sites or monuments, which is what makes it nice.

It's Concord-as-real-life, with pleasant family neighborhoods, a compact commercial district, a number of good restaurants, light meal stops, bakeries, specialty food shops, and a different mood from that of the lofty historical and literary significance of Concord center.

Drop in at 40 Park Lane, 40 Beharrell Street (tel: 800-656-2940 or 978-369-2940) for addictive sweet-and-salt pecans, gourmet toffees, chocolate bark and lots of gourmet food gifts.

West Concord's retail marvel is the West Concord Five & Ten, 106 Commercial Street (tel: 978-369-9011), a modest shop that has everything other stores do not: sewing elastic? Hallowe'en costumes? Printer paper? Locks and keys? Kitchen implements? Watch batteries? They've got it all. They know where everything is, and a lot of it is in storage, so if you can't find it, ask.

West Concord also has Concord's other Commuter Rail train station. The train ride between West Concord station and Concord Center depot takes six minutes (16 trains daily on weekdays). The conductor may not even bother to sell you a ticket.
