Kittery, the most southerly town in Maine, is pretty and historic, far nicer than its commercial outlet store mecca reputation would have you know.

Kittery outlet stores! Kittery outlet stores!

You'll hear it and see it, and if you exit from I-95 just after entering Maine from New Hampshire and follow US 1 you'll see Kittery's 120+ shops, stores, factory outlets and similar emporia.

But there is another Kittery as well, a pretty, historic New England coastal town ranged along ME Route 130 which wanders along the coast past historic Fort McClary, near Fort Foster and Seapoint Beach, through the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge, with pretty views of the sea, the forest and the salt marshes.

By all means, come to Kittery to shop. But then drive along ME 130 to see the real Kittery, the pretty Kittery of the Maine coast, all the way to neighboring York.
