Just because Rhode Island is the smallest state in the union, many people assume that the variety of things to see and do in this corner of New England is limited. Not so!

Cities such as Providence are pleasant and of manageable size, and then there's Newport, with its palatial 19th-century mansions, and Block Island, a tidy little resort at sea.

Rhode Island is known for its beaches, and some of the finest are in South County along the state's southwestern shore: wonderful names such as Misquamicut, Weekapaug, and Quonochontaug identify the built-up areas along the strand.

May is officially celebrated as Heritage Month in Rhode Island, commemorating that "Little Rhodie" was the first colony to declare independence from British rule (May 4, 1776).

On May 1, or thereabouts, May Day Breakfasts are held by all sorts of church, civic, and fraternal organizations across the state, and the public is invited to most of them. These can be pretty lavish affairs, and you're sure to get your money's worth.
