Take a drive (or ride your bike, if you're in shape) along Newport's 10-mile Ocean Drive. Brenton Point State Park has parking, walking, and picnic areas, and there's a public fishing area with parking nearby. Ocean Drive also gives you a look at some of the yachts sailing on Rhode Island Sound, and at the mansions around the end of the island.
