Train

Amtrak runs Northeast Regional trains daily from New York City to Boston along the coastal route via New Haven, Old Saybrook, New London, Mystic, and Providence.

The trip from New York City to Mystic takes about 3 hours, from Boston about 1-1/2 hours.

You can avoid the high summer (July & August) hotel crush in Mystic by taking an Amtrak train through this area and getting off for the day at Mystic, where a bus will take you the 8/10 mile (1.3 km) from the station to Mystic Seaport; or you can walk for 15 minutes to get there.

After your day roaming around the ships, old buildings, and exhibits, board an afternoon train to Providence or Boston (or New Haven, or New York City).

There's no extra charge for the stopover if you buy a through train ticket, and you obviate the need for a hotel room.
