When big college events such as homecomings, graduations, and major football matches draw crowds, rooms are scarce throughout the area. Reserve in advance if you can.

The grand Hotel Northampton, 36 King St., Northampton MA 01061 (tel 413-584-3100), at the corner of Main and King streets, is the most prominent place to stay in town, and has been so since 1916. The 72 rooms and suites have been furnished with classic pieces (including some four-poster beds) and Laura Ashley fabrics. The various eateries within are popular meeting places. Wiggins Tavern is a dark, colonial restaurant serving traditional American fare. The Coolidge Park Cafe dishes up lighter items and drinks; customers spill out onto the patio for dining in warmer months.

The Autumn Inn, 259 Elm St., Northampton, MA 01060 (tel 413-584-7660), on Elm St (Route 9) across from Smith College, is the closest thing in Northampton to the traditional college inn. From the street you see an attractive brick house, but behind the house are 34 comfortable motel units and a small, pretty swimming pool. Special attention is given to good-quality furnishings and equipment here; a lounge and dining room provide sustenance.
