New England's largest traditional state fair is held in West Springfield MA every September. Coming soon: a huge casino complex.

The Eastern States Exposition is New England's great state fair, and the ninth largest fair in North America, running for over two weeks beginning in mid-September.

Nicknamed "The Big E," it features free entertainment, a circus, the Avenue of States, thrill shows, New England history and agriculture exhibits, handicrafts, animals, rides, shops, a parade every day, and lots of food stands and eateries.

The Big E is located at the fairgrounds, 1305 Memorial Avenue, West Springfield MA 01089, off Route 147 near the Westfield River (map).

There's an admission fee to the grounds, but lots to do once you're inside. See the official website for details.

Plans are afoot to construct a huge destination casino complex on part of the fairgrounds, perhaps by 2016.
