The Birches Resort on Moosehead Lake, Maine, 31 miles (50 km) east of Jackman along ME Routes 6 & 15 (map) is the complete northern Maine summer and winter getaway. In summer, head out on the lake for a moose cruise, do some whitewater rafting, take a guided kayak or mountain bike eco tour, or a plane ride or Jeep tours. In winter there's cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, ice fishing on the lake, and snowshoeing through untouched back country. The spirit here is of a traditional Maine hunting camp from the old days: friendly and comfortable rather than fancy, with nature and the out-of-doors being the reason you're here. Accommodations at The Birches are in 20 rustic waterfront cabins, six private homes, simple wilderness yurts in the forest, and hotel-style rooms in the main lodge and The Riverview. Here's a glimpse of the cabins: ...and the kitchenette: ...and sipping a glass of wine on a cabin porch overlooking Moosehead Lake in winter: Cabins can sleep from four to eight people in one or two bedrooms. Each cabin has a kitchenette, wood heating stove, bathroom with shower, porch overlooking the lake, and lots of firewood. Small-plane aviation is a natural part of activities here, as flat planes were the only easy way to reach the lake in the old days. Each September, on the weekend after Labor Day, there's the annual Moosehead Lake fly-in by float planes—hundreds of them gather on the vast lake for fun and flying. The
