From the Rockland Ferry Terminal (tel 207-596-5400), 517A Main Street (at Talbot Street; map), Rockland ME 04841-0645, the Maine State Ferry Service will take you by car-ferry on the 15-mile, 75-minute voyage to Vinalhaven Island, in Penobscot Bay, for a taste of island vacation life. The ferries make six trips in each direction on most days, four on Sundays in winter. There are also ferries to tiny Matinicus Island, a 23-mile, 2-1/4-hour voyage made weekly in the warm months, three times a month in spring and autumn, and monthly in winter. For full information, see the Maine State Ferry Service website, or telephone the Rockland Ferry Terminal at 207-596-5400 . The Concord Coach bus station is in the same building as the ferry dock at 517A Main Street (map). —by Tom Brosnahan
