Cannon Mountain (4100 feet/1250 meters), on the north side of Franconia Notch off I-93 in Franconia Notch State Park (map), is a popular destination for all sorts of outdoor activities. In spring, summer, and autumn (especially the fall foliage season), visitors take the 70-passenger aerial tramway (cable car) to the summit for the fine views and for short nature walks. The tramway station is just off I-93, Exit 2, and US 3 north of the Old Man, and has its own parking lot. It's also possible to hike to the summit over rough but well-marked trails in several hours, either from the base or from the Appalachian Mountain Club mountain hikers' hut at Lonesome Lake. In winter, Cannon Mountain is a ski area with slopes positioned to receive generous blankets of snow, and a vertical drop of 2145 feet (654 meters). More... Cannon Mountain (tel 603-823-5563) is operated by the State of New Hampshire, as it is in Franconia Notch State Park. Cannon
