The only public beach among the mansions is worth a look for a swim in Newport.

Gooseberry Beach in Newport, Rhode Island, is "the beach among the mansions," right on Ocean Drive (Map of Newport).

Bailey's Beach (private) and Hazard's Beach (private) flank this small beach, the only one of the three that is open to the public.

In fact, like Bailey's and Hazard's, Gooseberry Beach is private, but part of it is opened to the public, with simple facilities. The rest of the beach, with superior private facilities, is for members only.

Gooseberry Beach may appeal to you if you like the idea of swimming right in the midst of Newport's palatial residences, but otherwise the beach is smaller, with fewer services, than the larger beaches in Newport and Middletown such as Easton's (First) Beach and Sachuest (Second & Third) Beach.
