The scenery along Newport's Ocean Drive is low heath, evergreens, rugged seacoast, sumptuous mansions, and smooth, grassy lawns maintained as state parks.

Take a drive (or ride your bike, if you're in shape) along Newport's 10-mile Ocean Drive.

Start at the southern end of Bellevue Avenue (Map of Newport) past Doris Duke's Rough Point mansion.

You'll come down a slope and pass Bailey's Beach (private), Gooseberry Beach (partly open to the public), and Hazard's Beach (private) before climbing into the low hills.

The road meanders along near the shore at the southwestern end of Aquidneck Island past mansions ranging from merely huge to palatial, over dunes and low hills, past salt marshes and rocky outcrops, with views of sailing craft and Block Island ferryboats to Brenton Point State Park.

The state park has parking, walking, and picnic areas, and there's a public fishing area with parking nearby. As there are few places along Ocean Drive to stop even for a moment, this is your chance.

Aptly-named Ocean Drive...

Continuing along Ocean Drive takes you past Hammersmith Farm, Jackie Kennedy's sometime summer home and an occasional summer White House for President John F Kennedy, and continues to the entrance of Fort Adams State Park.

From Fort Adams it's a short drive back to the center of Newport.
