The Wildflower Inn, near Lyndonville in Vermont's beautiful unspoiled Northeast Kingdom (map), may be the perfect Vermont country getaway destination. An atmospheric Vermont country inn, a quiet refuge from the madness of cities, it's also a congenial meeting place where you can get to know others in search of clear air and beautiful views. The inn is open for all four seasons. In summer, the inn is popular with families because of the outdoor swimming pool and all the organized activities for both adults and children, and with hikers and mountain bikers because of the Kingdom Trails right here. Talk about kid friendly: bibs and sippy cups are readily available for the tiny ones, and snowman pancakes, complete with chocolate chip eyes, nose and buttons, delight the older ones at breakfast.
In autumn, the fall foliage—especially given the inn's country hillside location and spectacular views—is reason enough to come. In winter, snowmobilers make the inn a stop on their way, and skiers and snowboarders use it as a base for runs at nearby Burke Mountain Resort, five miles (8 km) east of the inn. (Burke Mountain is popular for its fine powder and quick lift lines.) The inn has its own sledding hill, and the countryside around is great for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. There may even be a sleigh ride. The inn offers a variety of complete vacation packages for all seasons—even one to attract you in spring "mud season," when the earth is coming alive and all over Vermont maple sugar houses fire up their boilers to make the wonderful maple syrup that I consider a necessity for pancakes, waffles and french toast. Here are other inns, B&Bs and hotels nearby. More... Wildflower Inn —by Tom Brosnahan
