The nature reserves along New Engalnd's hundreds of miles of ocean coastline, and the islands offshore, are great places for birding. New Hampshire and Vermont's national forests are other choice areas. Check with the various preservation societies for exact information, especially the Trustees of Reservations and the National Audubon Society. The Boston Globe includes a weekly notice of unusual bird sightings in eastern Massachusetts. In the 1980s, American bald eagles were introduced into the Quabbin Reservoir reservation in central Massachusetts. Today some are year-round residents, and others come for the winter. The best time to spot a bald eagle at Quabbin is in February. Call the visitor center (tel 413-323-7221) for info.
