Gasoline (benzin, petrol) and diesel fuel (mazot) is cheaper in the USA than in Europe or in many other countries. Fuel costs more if you buy it in the very center of a larger city, which you need not do. Smaller cars ("subcompact" and "compact" in car-rental terminology) normally have fuel efficiencies of about 25 to 35 miles per gallon, which means that the cost of fuel works out to about 10¢ to 15¢ per mile (that's 6 ¢ to 9 ¢ per kilometer). Thus the cost of fuel to drive between Boston and New York City (205 miles, 330 km) would be $23.43 to $32.80, depending upon the car and your driving habits.
