Amtrak's Vermonter is a daily train that travels between Washington DC and New York City via Connecticut and Massachusetts to Burlington (Essex Junction), Vermont.

It starts in Washington DC and after New York City's Penn Station, it continues along the western Connecticut Shoreline stopping at Stamford, Bridgeport and New Haven, then north up the Connecticut River Valley via Meriden, Kensington-Berlin and Hartford CT to Springfield and Amherst MA; then into Vermont stopping at Brattleboro, Bellows Falls, Claremont, Windsor, White River Junction (for Woodstock VT and Lebanon and Hanover NH), Randolph, Montpelier, Waterbury (for Stowe), Essex Junction (for Burlington) and St Albans near the Canadian border (but get out at Essex Junction/Burlington for bus connections to Montréal QC.)

The train takes nearly 14 hours to make the entire trip from Washington DC to St Albans VT, but only 5-1/2 hours from New York City to Brattleboro VT.

From New York City to Burlington VT takes under 9 hours traveling through beautiful country along the Connecticut River most of the way.

For Skiers

The Vermonter is especially useful for skiers going from Washington, Philadelphia and New York City to the ski slopes of Vermont, but is also great for a getaway anytime of year from the cities straight into the New England countryside.
