From Dexter Grist Mill in the center of Sandwich MA on Cape Cod, walk along Water Street (MA 130) and the shore of Shawme Pond for a minute or two to reach this small museum dedicated to the life and work of Thornton W Burgess (1874-1965), who was born in Sandwich, Massachusetts. Author of some 170 books, many of them for children, and 15,000 newspaper stories, Burgess was the creator of such classic children's characters as Peter Rabbit, Reddy Fox and Hooty Owl, and chronicler of their adventures. Burgess was an early and ardent amateur naturalist. Many of his stories had their genesis in the forests, fields, waters and wildlife habitats of Sandwich. He lived for many years in Hampden, Massachusetts, near Springfield. His home there is now the 356-acre Laughing Brook Wildlife Sanctuary of the Massachusetts Audubon Society. Thornton
